The Particle in a Square applet allows students investigate the wave functions associated with a particle confined to a 2-dimensional region bounded by a square.

Change the values of the quantum numbers n_x and n_x. Rotate the image by clicking and dragging.

Remember that the particle is confined to the square: the 3-D image of the wave function just shows the value of the wave function at each point in the square. Another way to view the wave function is to click the "Color by Value" control and press the "Show Top View" button. This displays a "contour" map of the wave function with color used to represent different values.
